Textual Analysis Of Adverts

Here we see Paramore's poster promoting their single Ignorance. No colour is used on this poster, just tones (black & white). The image is abstract which is a convention for alternative rock posters. If the poster was bright colours it would not fit in with the genre. This poster I believe is quite calm to look at, it isn't too in your face however because of the lack of colour it isn't really eye catching, however the text is easily noticed due to the white text against a black background the. The main font 'Paramore' is effective because it is a good size and like I said before, easily seen against the black backgroud, it is also a recogniseable font becasuse Paramore use this font on all of their promotional products. The image shown on this poster is also shown on Paramore's single 'ignorance', so this will be why the chosen image is selected, so it becomes recognisable. We notice the bands label 'Fueled By Ramen' at the bottom of the poster so we automatically know that Paramore are an independent band because Fueled By Ramen is an independent label and from the label we know Paramore are an alternative rock band because Fueled By Ramen deal with this genre.

Here we see Muse's poster promoting their new album The Resistance. This poster uses quite alot of colour.  The image on the poster is abstract because we can't really tell what it is, it looks very futuristic which goes with Muse's music. Because of the abstract image we can automatically relate Muse to being apart of the alternative rock genre. The colour used in this poster makes it more eye catching and noticeable. The text on the poster stands out well with it been placed on a white background, this also makes it easy to read. The font they used for the band logo is also effective as it is placed largely at the top of the advert and it is easily recogniseable due to muse placing this logo on all their band merch. We also recognise the image on the poster because it is used on Muse's album The Resistance. Looking at the poster we notice the label Warner Bros as we can see the logo, this helps us know that Muse are a mainstream alternative band because they are signed to one of the big four. With Warner Bros being one of the big four, they don't just deal with Alternative music they also deal with Hip Hop, Pop, R&B and Rock.

Here we see Rihanna's poster promoting her album Loud. We see Rihanna represented on the advert looking very glamourous. The main colour to stand out on this poster is the colour red which goes well with the title loud because it is very viberant. Looking at this advert we can tell that Rihanna is an R&B artist because like R&B albums she herself is shown on the advert, not some sort of abstract image. The image presented on this advert is alsp the image what is presented on the album Loud, so the image will be recogniseable and we will automatically think of Rihanna. The colours of the text stand out because of the light colours against a dark back ground, so it works well however the font used for Rihanna's name is different to the usual font she would use to represent her. This is because I think the usual font doesn't go with the look Rihanna is portraying. Looking at the poster we notice a Def Jam logo which is the label Rihanna is signed to. Seeing this helps us know that Rihanna's genre is R&B because Def Jam deal with Hip Hop/R&B artists. From this we are also able to tell that Rihanna is a mainstream artist.

All of these things I have noticed in these existing adverts, I need to consider when it comes to making my own advert because if I don't it will not follow the conventions of an advert for an album. The first two posters I analysed are from the alternative rock genre so I will mainly focus my poster on them. On the posters we see abstract images that have something to do with the album that has been released so I will make sure I include an image that is from my digipak, I also need to include a release date, the band name, the record label and mention one hit song that is included on the album. If I do all these things on my advert, it will follow all the conventions of an advert and with the abstract image the conventions for the genre also.
