Textual Analysis CD cover 1

Here we see that the band Muse is represented but they are not represented as themselves. They are represented as different by the album not having a photo of them. Their album cover is abstract which is apart of the alternetive rock codes and conventions so their album cover represents them as an alternative band. Hardly any alternative bands have themselves presented on the front cover of their albums so Muse's Labels Warner Bros, Helium 3, Taste, Mushroom amd Dangerous will follow this convention so it is recogniseable that they are a rock band. Because the album cover is not an image of the band, it makes things quite mysterious, especially for people who do not know what the band looks like.

(examples of alternative rock albums)

The connotations of the image on this album cover is mystery, life and  science. Because there isnt an image of the band this brings mystery because we don't see what the band looks like so we think about what they could look like in our head. You can also see the planet Earth on the album which brings science and life to the album. The album cover is very futuristic looking this could be due to the band possibly making a change to their sound.

This album belongs to the alternative rock genre. The conventions it follows makes it this genre, for example the way the band are not shown on the front cover of the album, all alternative bands have album covers that don't show the band its alwaus a random image. Another convention would be the use of colour, the album looks futuristic which is classed as modern which is what the whole altermative genre is about, being modern.

Looking at this Album I would say the audience would be 16 and above. This is because of the part of the album cover links to science and looks very futuristic which I don't think anybody younger would really look at however they would look at it because the bright colours make it very eye catching, the album doesn't really represent anyone younger. Also because of the many colours used on this album cover it isn't aimed at a certain genre, it's mixed.

Muse belong to an institution called Warner Bros Records. Warner Brothers are one of the big 4 so they will deal with all different types of genres of music. The institution has given  Muse individuality by making their album cover so futuristic and modern to go with the music they produce.

Because the album is shown in a futuristic way this makes the band to be represented as a modern band and that they are the future.
